Opening the eyes and hearts of our younger generations… giving back to our heroes.

“Opening the eyes of our younger generation to struggles and sacrifices of the men and women who fought for our freedom is critical. Today, the historical significance and modern day struggles of our Veterans are often overlooked in both our educational institutions and society.

Engaging a High School hockey team of 15 year olds with a hockey team of Veterans was incredible from both perspectives. The
Warriors came to watch a game and spoke to the boys post game – sharing the reality of war, and most candidly the lack of purpose and emptiness that grips them when they return home. Talking about teamwork in the battlefield and on the ice – there was an instant connection. Hockey is a team – a team is brotherhood. Period. The boys followed by writing surprise letters to the teams and their coaches held a surprise “mail call” in the locker rooms. Finally – the boys adopted two struggling Warrior Veterans and we surprised them at Christmas. Through this experience the boys gained some very candid perspective outside their bubble, had to really reflect as they wrote to the players and were genuinely excited about helping to surprise our two families and making their Christmas so special. Watching a 15 year old hockey player wrapping Barbie’s, baby toys and a Cinderella dress was something special. The Warriors in turn were overwhelmed as they said over and over – “because someone cared.”
